Our History

In 1924, Anthony J. Thomas Sr., "Tony", immigrated to the United States with his family. At the age of 14, Tony dropped out of school and took odd jobs to support the family after his father became ill. By 1946, Tony had saved enough money to open his own business, A. Thomas Meat Market, a small storefront meat market located in the Haymarket district of Louisville, Kentucky.

A. Thomas Meat Market has since grown into A. Thomas Foodservice, an 82,000 sq. ft., federally-inspected meat production and food distribution facility. Now a third generation family owned company, A. Thomas Foodservice still operates with the same ethics, pride and demand for product excellence and customer satisfaction as it did in 1946.

Mattingly Foods, also a 3rd generation company with equally strong roots and history in the foodservice industry, acquired A. Thomas Foodservice to expand their services and territory and adding to their rich family tradition as "The Service-First Family".

As Mattingly Foods and A. Thomas Meats grew, they found yet another great family-owned custom meat processor right down the road in Louisville, Irish Hill. Owned by Tom Dawson and John Baker, Irish Hill meat company was known in the industry to be experts in custom-cut beef. Mattingly Foods selected these companies knowing the combined reputation of all three families would create an industry leader in beef and specialty products such as pork, chicken, lamb and much more.

Mattingly Foods now sells fine dining products to the public through the combined efforts of all three families to introduce you to the highest quality, custom-cut beef and specialty meats in the industry.
